Like most hip hop fans in the late 80’s and early 90’s we learned about all the great jazz, funk, and soul artists from reading the liner notes and trying to make sense of where all the samples came from.

Roy Ayers, the father of soul-jazz, jazz-funk, and neo-soul, has made just over 91 albums across his very long career. His most popular single “Everybody Loves The Sunshine” is considered to be the most sampled song of all time (Notorious B.I.G., Dr. Dre, A Tribe Called Quest, Mary J. Blige and 2Pac are just some of the more well known artists who have sampled a Roy Ayers break).

Creating the moniker Roy Ayers Ubiquity (the term means the state or capacity of being, or seeming to be) in 1970 he combined elements of jazz, funk, and pop into the group’s music and in the 1980’s started his own record company, Uno Melodic, releasing a number of solo albums as well as releases by Sylvia Striplin, Bobbi Humphrey and the Eighties Ladies.
