Considered one of the pioneers of female rap, MC Lyte was the first solo female rapper to release a full album with 1988’s“Lyte As A Rock” (which this poster is based on and my first CD).

Only 16 when she released her debut single I Cram To Understand U” the album was produced mostly by Audio Two (Milk and Giz her step-brothers) and The Alliance, all three part of the First Priority Crew.

At the time, a female rapper had to be twice as good as her male counterparts to be taken seriously.

Lyte certainly took up the challenge, having contributed to what is considered one of the greatest years in hip hop history alongside other stone cold classics like EPMD’s “Strictly Business”, Big Dady Kane’s “Long Live The Kane”, Public Enemy’s “It Takes A Nation Of Millions”, Eric B & Rakim’s “Follow The Leader”, and N.W.A.’s “Straight Out Of Compton”.
