It’s impossible to present the innumerable accomplishments and incredible long list of productions of the legendary record producer Lee “Scratch’ Perry in this small space.
His career has spanned the entire history of Jamaican popular music from the sound system dances of the 50’s, to the ska and rock steady eras of the 60’s, through the golden age of reggae in the 70’s and well beyond until his passing in 2021.
Between 1968 and 1978 alone, it’s estimated that Perry produced no less than 1000 sides.
You may not know this but Perry himself would be the first person to dis reggae: “I wish my music would be called Earth Music, Roots Music, Whirlwind Music, even soul, but not reggae. I’m not fighting against it, I just don’t want to join it. I was in it, I’ve been ripped off and it’s a real burn.”
