Kid Creole and The Coconuts were created by lead singer August Darnell (side note he produced the album by Funkapolitain) with Andy Hernandez aka Coati Mundi and Adriana Kaegi as an offshoot of the disco group Dr Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band (see Cherchez La Femme sampled heavily by Ghostface.)
Incorporating a mix of disco, latin, Caribbean, and big band styles they were a multiracial, multi-cultural, band self-labeled as mulatto music, transcending musical and fashion trends.
Darnell modelled his look and fashion style form jazz singer and legendary showman Cab Calloway.
Meanwhile Adriana, the lead background vocalist and lead choreographer of the Coconuts, was inspired by 50’s girl groups but with the attitude of punk women who had no problem with putting the macho Kid Creole in his place.
