Janet Jackson’s third album “Control”, co-written and produced by legendary producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, is the most influential album of the 1980’s ushering in the fusion of R&B, funk, disco, and synthesized production.

This would go on to serve as the template and inspiration for countless pop-R&B acts through the 1990’s and in to the new century.It has also been regarded as a template upon which numerous female artists have modeled their careers.

Jackson’s influence is still evident throughout pop music: the way stars choreograph their videos, their vocal intonations, their visual presentation, and the very ways in which they navigate celebrity.

But today, she’s rarely considered at the level of her musical peers from the 80’s and 90’s such as Prince, Madonna, and even her bother Michael.
