Today we start a new weekly series where we offer our favourite suggestions for newly released music and some gems from the past you may have missed. This past few weeks saw two releases from our favourite producer Maurice Fulton, an original sample we’ve been looking for since last summer, a house reissue and some stellar remixes and b-sides. Although we can’t oversee how you get your music please do your best to purchase this music provided by the links below each image and video.
- SYCLOPS – PINK EYE LP
Maurice Fulton has more aliases than Jennifer Garner (zing). He released a single back in 2001 under the guise of Syclops, then a couple of singles on Tirk records a few years later and a full release on DFA records. This is the second full length under this pseudonym on his own Bubbletease Communications label. Not sure if this is coming out on vinyl but lets hope Running Back provides support like they did for the Mim Suleiman and Boof! singles.
2. RECLOOSE – SPELUNKING EP
Seems like a lot of artists have been releasing their back catalogs of late. I missed this on vinyl when it came out in the late 90’s. Listening to it now with fresh ears it’s unbelievable how long it’s taken people to catch up to him.
3. THUNDERCAT – FINAL FIGHT (Single)
No secret that I love Thundercat. Here’s a new single from the the Adult Swim Singles series. I can’t believe it takes a cartoon network to promote some of the most forward thinking music today. Check out more in the Soundcloud link above.
4. STEVEN JULIEN – BLOODLINE LP
I’ve bought a few singles in the past year from Steven Julien and honestly had no idea that he was Funkineven. Apparently he’ll be here in few weeks or months.
5. TA-KU – SONGS TO BREAK UP TO LP
I was going through all my music for FUTURA this past week and decided to do a deep dive on all the artists back catalogues that we play and I guess this one fell through the cracks. Shit like this happens when there is so much good music out there.
6. YUTAKA – SAO JORGE
For the past year I’ve been playing out an edit by Len Leise called “Stars for Jorge” and it’s been killing me ever since trying to find the original sample. Seeing Jorge in the title I assumed it was a tribute to Jorge Ben but couldn’t find anything remotely similar in his catalog. Obviously it wasn’t him. You should also check out the edit below.
7. PHOTAY – PHOTAY LP
As the years go on I occasionally wonder if I will continue to be wowed by new music and retain the passion I did when I first started DJ’ing. The answer is yes every time. I wouldn’t say that I love Photay’s music, it’s more like I have a big crush on it. This isn’t his newest release or remix which are all great but I decided to share one of his earlier releases from 2014. Buy everything.
8. ROBERT GLASPER x KAYTRANADA – THE ARTS SCIENCE REMIXES
Seems pretty obvious why you should check this out with two heavy hitters in collaboration but to be honest this is the track I think really stands out. Reminds me of 4hero on Talking Loud. I got mine off iTUNES but I’m sure you can find it elsewhere.
9. SU NA – CORAL ANGEL EP
I came across Su Na while looking for more tracks by Ravyn Lenae and noticed she did some guest vocals on another great track called “Tell Me”. I’m a sucker for this haunting lo-bass stuff. Seems like he’s really busy on tour right now.
10. ROISIN MURPHY – ALL MY DREAMS/INNOCENCE (Prod. by Maurice Fulton)
In late 2015 one of my dreams came true. My favourite producer was going to remix one of my favourite vocalists. Yep Maurice remixed Roisin’s single “House of Glass” and she even made it her video for the single, which you can watch after the link. I had a feeling they would collaborate again and lo and behold here it is with three more 12″ singles coming out through the summer.
